Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
