Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
