Early Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major explosions shaking Tehran, amid statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive strike.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were observed billowing over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The nature of these blasts suggests that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet reported, without immediately offer further details.
Background: Escalating Tensions and Recent Events
The incident takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated strains in the region. Major events preceding this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of American warships in the Middle East, featuring the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with indications of more discussions planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had charged the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. Officials rejected claims about weapons development and protest deaths as baseless.
These developments remains fast-moving, with additional reports anticipated as events unfold.
