European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
